Supporter Spotlight – West Austin Lions Club
With the kick off of services on optical Prime we would like to thank the sponsors of our ribbon cutting and 8th birthday celebration.
The West Austin Lions Club has a long history of humanitarian service. In fact, the West Austin Lions are one of half Helen’s longest supporters. That is why we are grateful that we could celebrate the launch of optical Prime with them.
Lions are best known for fighting blindness by conducting vision screenings, equipping hospitals and clinics, distributing medicine and raising awareness of eye disease. In fact, half Helen’s Founder and Executive Director Chelsea Elliott was first introduced to the Spot Vision Screener during a Lions Club meeting. This revolutionary tool takes 23 measurements of the eye within seconds. Unlike the standard eye chart, which can only measure an individual’s distance acuity, the Spot Screener is able to identify six of the most common vision impairments in infants as young as six months old. Chelsea realized that if the screener had existed when she was a child, her doctors could have spotted her disease sooner and possibly saved her eye. This realization inspired her to start half Helen.
The West Austin Lions Club has played a monumental role in helping children see clearly and we can’t thank them enough for their continued support.
